FACILITATOR COACHING & TRAINING PROGRAM

In the work of Systemic Constellation Methods of Bert Hellinger

This Prospectus includes:

I. Overview of the Program
II. Weekend Structure
III. Other Information
IV. Certification
V. Logistics, Dates, and Costs

I. OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

Length of Program

Total of 23 training days plus on-line interactions spaced over 11 months. Program contains:

• 9 principles & practices days.

• 3 days of personal issues workshops for participants and their significant others only.

• 3 supervision and video coaching days

• 6 days of workshop participation at a process level with the trainer.

• 2 days of student presentations.

• 5 on-line "conversations" with the trainer

• 2 coaching conversations (one on one conversations with the program director) that take place during the program. One day has been set aside for the first conversations early in the program.

Note: To be eligible for certification, students must additionally participate in 6 workshop days with other experienced facilitators. (The reason is that you see the work done by other facilitators and have the freedom to develop your own style.)

Program Content:

Program content addresses four main areas:

Principles. The Orders of Love and other principles of the work as developed and articulated by Bert Hellinger and others.

Practices. Develop the skills you need as a facilitator to manage groups, manage your own state while "standing in the fire" and increase your perception. This portion provides foundation of basic skills needed to develop artistry as a .

Self-awareness. Clean the instrument of self. Learning how your own culture, life experience, thinking and processing strategies affect your perception of others and your interpretations of the constellations (in workshop settings and real life). This includes three workshops during the course of the program to explore your own family systems issues in a supportive environment.

Supervision and high quality feedback. This includes the opportunity to facilitate constellations with a supervisor available, on-going feedback from process questions, and two individual coaching conversations. Supervision gives you direct experience learning how to interact with the "knowing" field that develops in constellations.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to observe many constellations and be a representative in several constellations. This is essential to developing a complete understanding of this work. Directly experiencing your visceral reactions as a representative will help you differentiate your own "stuff" from that of the "knowing field". Participating as a representative deepens your compassion, humility and understanding of what it means to be human. Sitting in the circle is also an important role. You learn to "hold the field" and be part of the container for the work.

Your learning goals as a student:

Each person enters the program with unique expectations, needs and learning goals. It is our task to support you reaching you learning goals throughout the program. Some of you may wish to facilitate constellations in a workshop setting, some of you may want to expand your understanding of human systems, group processes, and he individual’s role in systems. Some of you may want to blend what you are learning of Hellinger’s principles and the facilitation practices into your own field of endeavor. Others may be here for personal healing or personal growth. Many of you may have several of these objectives and more. The trainer will be in an on-going dialog with you through out the program to assist you in meeting your learning goals as they unfold.

Certification from The Human Systems Institute:

This is a learning program with the option of certification. (See Certification section for information on specific requirements.) Certification is available up to one year after the training portion is complete and is given when all requirements are met. C.E.U.’s for this program may be available through Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon USA.

II. WEEKEND STRUCTURE

The program alternates between a four day Training Weekend (Thursday through Sunday) and a Self-study and on-line conversation with the trainer during the month between sessions. This gives you a variety of experiences necessary to learning to facilitate systemic constellations skillfully.

From previous years’ programs, we have learned two important things. First, students learn a great deal more when they can see, hear and participate in each other’s learning experiences. Second, providing on-going, frequent, high-quality feedback in the form of dialog, our famous "process questions," home-exploration opportunities, rounds, etc., vastly increased our students’ learning. For example, process questions proved to be one of the most powerful tools for teaching the difficult skill/attitude/state of phenomenological seeing. As a result, this year’s program places an emphasis on providing you 1) the opportunity to share learning experiences and 2) frequent, high quality, supportive feedback as you learn and progress. This program is designed to maximize shared learning and feedback opportunities, hence the name, Facilitator Coaching and Training Program. Shared learning opportunities and individual feedback are available through five main avenues.

Supervision Days — There are three supervision days in the program, as well as an additional opportunity when you co-lead the Sunday Mini-Workshops. Facilitating constellations is a very different experience than being a representative. The level of complexity you must attend to, the use of your own awareness to hold the group, the constellation and the client all at the same time, the ability to hold center in difficult situations, and so forth. are much greater. In supervision sessions, you will directly experience the role of facilitator in a safe, supportive environment. You will be encouraged to explore "stretches" that are specific to your learning needs and goals for the program.

Process Questions — In observing students in the more "traditional" training programs, it became apparent that many of them remained absorbed at a "content" level, impervious to the more subtle processes that underlie the unfolding of the constellation process. Process questions engage students more completely in understanding the constellation work. As a side benefit, these questions can have be hugely transformative and produce wonderful, lasting personal growth. For each public workshop during the program, a process question will be prepared you that takes into consideration your learning goals and where you are in your development as a student. You receive the question at the beginning of the day, interact with the question throughout the workshop, then debrief with fellow students after the workshop. Each question builds on the prior one and guides your development as a potential facilitator on many levels.

Student Presentation — During the last two training weekends, students will make short presentations to the public (usually interested participants from constellation workshops and friends of participants.) In this supportive environment, you will co-lead a mini-workshop with another student (your study buddy) on a topic of your choice. This gives you an opportunity to link this work to your own area of expertise and life experience and to explain the work to others in your own words.

Self-Assessment Questionnaire (S.A.Q.) and Coaching Conversations — The S.A.Q. (re-)occurs three times throughout the program (prior to starting, mid-way and the next to the last meeting) and gives you direct feedback on your cognitive understanding of the work. The S.A.Q. takes about 30 minutes to complete. The coaching conversations are just that, a conversation with the trainer/program director about your goals, and an opportunity to receive individual coaching. These are also an opportunity for you to make requests regarding the content or structure of the program.

On-line threaded discussion group — Our website will host a group specifically for this training (or possibly combined with the Edmonton group, depending on how things work out.) Topics and questions will be posted at regular intervals by the trainer (and hopefully also by students). This is a place to discuss your experiences as you take what you learn from the weekend into your day-to-day life.

3 Day Training weekends

Training days (typically Thursday and/or Fridays. See Syllabus for details and dates):

• Split attention exercises: warm up the mind/body for the session. These are fun and interesting. You’ll want to arrive on time so you can enjoy these.

• Rounds: each student reports on last month’s home exploration questions and/or other topics.

• Principles: a specific principle will be examined in some depth with lecture and discussion

• Group formers will typically be demonstrated during some of the sessions.

• Practices: skills related to facilitating will be introduced through lecture, discussion and skill-building exercises.

• Home study opportunities: learning exercises for the time between sessions will be presented at the end of the final training day.

Saturday: Saturday is a public Family Constellation workshop. It is vital for your learning that you have the opportunity to observe the work being done live, and to stand in roles. Participating in the workshop will enhance your understanding of the work and of the diversity and complexity of issues people can bring. Many trainings only work with the members of the training group. We feel strongly that you need to become familiar with the breadth of issues that confront us as human beings and thus want you to participate in and experience public workshops. This is also when you will be given your process questions.

Sundays: will typically alternate between a personal workshop day and a supervision day.

• On the personal workshop days, your friends and family are invited to join you at no extra charge. This is the students’ constellation workshop. Study of this work brings us face to face with our own family issues (and organizational and health issues as well.) This is a safe space for you to explore those issues, have a constellation facilitated for you and have the support of those you hold most dear.

• On supervision days, you will have the opportunity to be the constellation facilitator with the support of the trainer. Standng in the shoes of the facilitator is a very different experience from observing or standing in roles. Supervision days may include training exercises such as "sensing the field" (calibrating your own responses to the information field present in human systems), and "six questions" (learning to ask effective questions during the chairwork portion of facilitating a constellation).

Between Session Learning Opportunities and On-line Interaction

You will be given an opportunity for self-exploration, skill practice and further learning between each session of the program. Those people wishing to be certified will want to do these exercises. You are encouraged to comment on your learning during the month via the on-line discussion forum and participate in the journal and video reports. These exercises are designed to increase your awareness of how you relate to yourself and others and to increase skills needed for facilitation.

NOTE: Training on how to use the on-line portion of this program will be given during the first four day training session.

On-line Portion will include:

Videos. Students may select two books and/or videos from the Institute’s lending library to take with them during the time between sessions. For those wishing to be certified, a video report will be due on a specified date roughly a month after the training weekend. These reports will be posted on site and you will be able to read fellow students comments on the tapes they view and books they read. For certification, you will be required to read at least one other report each between session month and comment on what you learn.

Journal. Each student will have an on-line journal and archive site. You will have a time during the between session month to dialog with the trainer via on-line chat. You may be given another process question at this time since we have found the "dialog" that forms between the trainer and student around process questions to be a powerful learning tool.

Forum. A threaded forum will be available on our website for all students past and present. You may ask questions and dialog about topics of interest at any time. The trainer will check into the forum about once a week, post pertinent topics and comment on threads.

Projected study time for this portion (not including time to watch videos and read books!) is about two to four hours per "between in session" month.

Your Learning Partner or "Study Buddy"& Sunday Mini-Workshops:

After the first weekend, a learning partner (or partners) will be assigned to you. Your partner will be selected as much for the differences between you as for your similarities. This is someone you can learn from.

You and your learning partner will have the responsibility for leading one of the mini-workshops that are scheduled for the last two training sessions. You will be responsible for incorporating at least one principle and/or practice from the body of systemic constellation knowledge into your presentation. You are encouraged as co-presenters to find a topic that you both have passion for that bears on this work and to bring your own work into the presentation. This is an opportunity to integrate what you are learning in this program with your own life world, expertise and experiences. If you choose, you will be offered structured, supportive feedback from your fellow students.

III. OTHER INFORMATION

Program Size:

Since this is a coaching program as well as a training program, the size is limited to a maximum of twelve people so that you will receive individualized support in your learning process.

Who should participate?

This program is intended as an adjunct to qualified professionals currently practicing in the healing arts and facilitation fields, or to those who wish to expand their compassion and acceptance of themselves, their families and their fellow human beings and who engage in this program for personal growth.

Sources and inspirations:

This program is an opportunity to develop an understanding and experience of Bert Hellinger’s phenomenological and systemic approach to human, and to explore what is required to facilitate systemic constellations in a way that is in alignment with the heart of this body of work. To fully embrace this work is to be willing to encounter your own soul. You will discover new ways of creating your self-image and family experiences and discover more about how you relate to others. The phenomenological approach requires the ability to follow what is unfolding in the moment without the crutch of judgment or theoretical beliefs, and the willingness to serve truth and love over ego or the desire to help.

It is helpful if you have done at least one constellation of your own family system or to have attended a constellation workshop prior to starting the program. An encounter with Bert Hellinger’s book, "Love’s Hidden Symmetry," is highly advisable.

In addition, this program will offer you a taste of the group dynamics skills developed by Michael Grinder and the conscious embodiment practices of Wendy Palmer. I have personally found Michael’s model to be very useful in creating a safe and sturdy container to allow individuals to come together to plumb the depths of their family soul, and to confront the love and truth that lives there. Wendy’s work offers practical skills for returning to center in stressful situations. Elements of Neuro-linguistic Programming and hypnotherapeutic langague are also woven in.

My Presuppositions as Program Director:

• You already have expertise and life experience that is valuable and we respect that. The customized nature of this program is intended to support you in developing in directions that are of interest to you.

• You are responsible for your own learning and development. The institute provides the resources and a safe container for you to experiment and explore your growing edges as a facilitator in this work.

• Learning this work and personal growth are inseparable.

• We learn the most from our own experiences, hence this program is designed to create learning experiences for you.

• We are all learning, including and especially the trainer/coach in this program.

• Much of this program is designed to make your own thinking and perception processes transparent to you. A willingness to encounter previously unknown aspects of your self in a loving and respectful manner is

• Some of your personal "stuff" may surface in the course of this program. It is important that you have resources outside the program to process whatever comes up between sessions.

Also Included While You Are Enrolled in the Program:

• Coaching at a process level at any H.S.I. sponsored workshops listed in the program schedule in the Portland area. (In other words if you want another process question, just ask — for our workshops or workshops with other facilitators.)

• Access to the Institute’s lending library. We have a nearly complete collection of English language books and tapes on the constellation work.

• On occasion, the Human Systems Institute may have the opportunity to facilitate a constellation on site for someone. As a program participant, you may choose to be placed on the Institute’s list for any on-site consultation constellations where a group of representatives is needed. Attendance at these events is voluntary and is a great learning opportunity for you as a student of the work.

• If you choose to become certified, you will be listed on the Institute’s web-site once all the requirements are met. You have up to one year after the training portion of the program is finished to complete the requirements.

Please note: We encourage you to form small study groups on your own and facilitate constellations with supportive friends and colleagues. You may wish to advertise these events in your local area. Readers often interpret a single source of information as an endorsement. On any written material you offer others, please also include Bert Hellinger’s web-side (www.hellinger.com) and any other useful sites (such as Hunter Beaumont’s www.hiddensymmetry.com) you may find to explain the work.

IV. CERTIFICATION:

Certification by the Human Systems Institute:

Certification is optional. Becoming certified means you have completed the required elements of the program. You can participate fully in the program without being certified, the only requirement is that you make a commitment to attend all of the weekend training sessions. The group size has been kept small to enhance your learning. Your presence is very important to the success of the program.

Certification in this program does not infer excellence in facilitating family constellations, although we certainly hope that those of you who complete this course and choose to facilitate constellations continue to hone and develop your ability and artistry as a facilitator. Certification means (a) you showed up, and (b) you completed the required course work in a satisfactory manner.

Please Note: Certification by the institute does not qualify participants to practice psychotherapy. This program is intended to provide skills and resources for practicing professionals who wish to add the use of constellations to their existing repertoire. It is the responsibility of each participant to limit the application of this approach to those clients and situations for which he or she has the appropriate qualifications.
